From 16/3 to 158/4: Pakistan’s Resilience on Display

Early Setback for Pakistan

Pakistan’s first Test against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi began with early challenges. The match, delayed by a wet outfield, finally started four hours late. Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bowl, capitalizing on the moist pitch. Hasan Mahmud made an early breakthrough, dismissing Abdullah Shafique with a fine edge caught by Zakir Hasan in the slips.

Bangladesh’s Early Domination

Bangladesh’s bowlers continued to dominate the early session. Pakistan captain Shan Masood, after a promising boundary, was caught behind by Shoriful Islam. A controversial DRS decision ended Masood’s stay at the crease. The situation worsened for Pakistan when Shoriful removed Babar Azam for a duck, caught brilliantly by Litton Das down the leg side. Pakistan found themselves struggling at 16/3.

Ayub and Shakeel’s Fightback

With Pakistan reeling, Saim Ayub and Saud Shakeel took charge. Shakeel began confidently, driving Nahid Rana for a boundary. Ayub, who started cautiously, gradually found his rhythm. He struck his first four with a cut shot off Mahmud, signaling the start of a strong partnership. The duo added 96 runs, bringing stability to the innings.

Shakeel’s Historic Milestone

After Ayub reached his maiden Test fifty, he was dismissed soon after the drinks break. However, Saud Shakeel remained firm. He not only reached his seventh Test fifty but also became the fastest Pakistani to score 1000 Test runs in just 20 innings. Shakeel’s innings was a testament to his growing stature in Pakistan’s batting lineup.

Late Resilience from Rizwan and Shakeel

As the day neared its end, Shakeel found a new partner in Muhammad Rizwan. Together, they started building another partnership, taking Pakistan to 158/4 at stumps. Rizwan’s composed approach complemented Shakeel’s aggressive style, ensuring that Pakistan ended the day on a positive note.

A Tough Day for Bangladesh

Despite their early successes, Bangladesh couldn’t maintain their dominance. The Pakistani batsmen’s resilience began to show, especially in the later sessions. Shoriful Islam and Hasan Mahmud were the standout bowlers, but they couldn’t prevent Pakistan’s fightback.

Looking Ahead

Day 2 promises to be crucial for both teams. Pakistan will aim to capitalize on the foundations laid by Shakeel and Rizwan, while Bangladesh will hope to regain control with early wickets.
